It’s one of the most-Googled locksmith questions in Louisiana, and the honest answer is “it depends on the key.” Here’s a plain-English breakdown of what drives the price.
Type of key matters more than year
People assume newer cars mean expensive keys, and that’s usually true — but not always. A 2015 base-model truck might still take a basic transponder key for under $150. A 2008 luxury SUV might need a smart key that runs much higher. The question isn’t the model year; it’s the key technology.
Rough categories
- Basic metal key, no chip. Older vehicles, mostly pre-1997. Cheap and quick — often under $50.
- Transponder key (chip in the head). Most cars built between roughly 1997 and 2010. The key has to be cut and the chip programmed to the car’s computer.
- High-security laser-cut key (sidewinder). Common on most modern vehicles. The cut is more complex and requires a different machine.
- Remote head key / flip key. Lock/unlock buttons built into the key head. Adds remote programming time.
- Smart key / prox fob (push-to-start). No mechanical blade required in the ignition. Highest-end key technology in most cars on the road today.
Why dealer prices are usually higher
The dealership has to tow your car in, fit it into their service schedule, and charge dealer-network rates for parts and labor. A mobile locksmith comes to you, finishes most jobs in under an hour, and uses the same OEM-compatible keys at a fraction of the markup.
What about “all keys lost”?
If you’ve lost every working key, the job is more expensive than getting a spare made — because we have to originate a new key from the car’s immobilizer or lock cylinder, not just copy an existing one. The single best move you can make to save money on car keys is to get a spare made before you lose your last key.
How to get an honest quote
Call your local locksmith with three pieces of information:
- Year, make, and model.
- What kind of key it is (regular, chip, flip, push-to-start — or just describe it).
- Whether you have a working key in your hand right now.
That’s enough for a real quote. Anyone who refuses to give you a number on the phone is either inexperienced or planning to upsell you on arrival.
